Our Winemaker

As we continue to grow our business, Matt Michael continues to evolve as an artisan winemaker.

Among Matt’s many influences, his Italian heritage has played a strong role in his decision to produce artisan wine. His paternal great-grandfather and maternal grandfather immigrated to the United States from Italy, and both made their own wine at home. They used the grapes available to them in the “new world” to produce wine that was shared with family and friends. Both men fostered a culture of wine—more than a beverage, the wine was made with great care and dedication and was served at family meals and gatherings. The older generations preserved and passed on the tradition of wine to the younger generations, and Matt came to appreciate the role of wine in everyday life, as well as the hard work and skill it takes to produce a balanced and enjoyable wine.

Matt attended the University of California at Davis, and graduated in 2000 with his B.S. in Fermentation Sciences. After graduation, he worked harvests at Valley View Winery in southern Oregon, at St. Francis Winery in Kenwood, California, and at Delegats Wine Estate in New Zealand. Upon his return to the United States, he became assistant winemaker at Quivira Winery in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County. He is currently the assistant winemaker at Sebastiani Winery in Sonoma.

Matt’s heritage, education, and career background have enabled him to assume the role of an artisan winemaker. He has evolved as a winemaker through his attention to the past, present, and future—he maintains an appreciation for his heritage and the traditional role of wine while cultivating a keen understanding of the present and future roles of wine in American culture.

Matt hopes that you enjoy and share the wine with family and friends. Salute!
